Spontaneous planning
Recently, I read about two services that would work very well together when you’re trying to organize a group of people who make use of disparate internet tools. Let’s say 5 of your friends use facebook, but someone else only uses yahoo calendar (why they would do such a thing is beyond me) and 3 others use google docs. The only unique identifier you have for these people is an email...

Mineral Spirits
If you ever plan on refinishing hardwood floors in your home be warned of the following two things be cognizant of the following: you’ll be left with a lot of dust don’t clean it with mineral spirits If you don’t follow the advice in the second bullet then remember the magic word… VENTILATE

We put the hard in hardwood.
Sanding hardwood floors was not quite as easy as I thought it would be. I’d also like to mention that installing new flooring is actually easier than refinishing old flooring. Who would have thunk it? Apparently, when your floor is old, slightly warped, and covered in paint and residue a 36 grit sand paper simply won’t suffice on a first pass. The subsequent 40, 80, and 120 grit...

How many roofers does it take...?
For the past month or so we have been looking into buying a house.  Let me rephrase that…  For the past month or so we have been looking into buying “A” house.  Yes, that’s right, a, as in one, as in more than zero and less than two.  Recently the reason for the delay has been a disagreement over an old, dilapidated roof.  At issue is a large pile of bricks perched...

Driving: Is it really worth it?
We recently purchased a 2006 Scion xA and while I love the car I once again find myself wondering how much I really enjoy car ownership.  After having my previous car stolen and then smashed and totalled by a drunk driver (along with four other cars no less), I was the victim of a highway hit and run in an uninsured rental car.  Well at least bad things come in threes, right?  If only… ...

new services (at least for me)
tripit: a fun an easy to use itinerary maker that aggregates all of your disparate travel information into one easy to read page.  it seems particularly useful for sharing itineraries with friends an family.  admittedly this might defeat the purpose of travelling for some :) disqus : i LOVE the idea behind this service.  it is basically a distributed commenting system that works across every major...

three little pots
I’m happy to report that the cilantro and italian basil are both doing quite well.  I started them going about five days ago.  After sneaking a little nibble of the basil I can safely say that it’s as delicious as advertised. photo by starfire

do you dopplr?
I started using dopplr, and it looks pretty interesting. I’m hoping to get som good recommendations for the trip to Japan.  It has some pretty good suggestions for DC, so I’m assuming Tokyo will be even better…

FOUR of FIVE ain't bad!
This has been a spectacular week for several reasons: BEST work week I can remember. Great time at home with my little family :) Lots of energy and positivity in my life.Sometimes a something not-so-positive needs to happen in order to have a breakthrough.  I really feel like I’m on to something big.  Now if I can shed some of my lingering bad habits I’d be thrilled.

google.org funded project: InSTEDD
InSTEDD makes innovative use of some web-based technologies I use everyday to improve disaster response and disease detection/prevention.  in a mock disaster they used twitter over sms to provide real-time, micro news updates  from the field in a google earth mashup.  very cool.  looking forward to seeing more from this organization
